Plug-In Hybrid Car Rolls Out-first from china

U.S.-China Collaboration

Others believe in China's potential in developing cars that are more environmentally friendly. The F3 DM's China launch comes just a few days after Washington and Beijing announced plans to work together on green car technology: China's Science Technology Ministry signed an agreement with the U.S. Energy Dept. to collaborate on battery technology to power cars on Dec. 11.

Although it's not much to look atthe F3 DM is based on the same platform as the gas-powered F3 sedan by BYD that resembles the Toyota Camrydriving one is remarkable. On a recent test drive at BYD's sprawling Shenzhen campus, the car's acceleration was impressive, going from zero to 60 in a respectable 10.5 seconds. What makes the experience so novel is the absence of engine noise, which heightens one's awareness of the sounds of rushing air and tires on the road. The car's top speed is about 100 mph, and it is capable of running for 60 miles before the batteries need recharging, which occurs automatically when the gas engine kicks in.

But the car faces an uphill climb to gain acceptance in a highly competitive Chinese auto market with dozens of manufacturers. After years of red-hot growth, China's vehicle sales are in a slump, falling 17% in November vs. a year ago. And Toyota's Prius has had a lackluster reception in China, having sold just 748 cars in the first 10 months of this year.

BYD's plug-in faces other challenges. Its battery pack takes about seven hours to recharge fully using a traditional power source, but most car owners live in apartment buildings with parking lots that don't provide electricity. "Infrastructure is a problem. It's not like North America, where everybody has independent housing where you have a plug-in in your garage," says Yale Zhang, director of greater China at automobile forecaster CSM Worldwide in Shanghai.
"In cities like Shenzhen, Shanghai, and Beijing, people live in big buildings where there is nowhere to plug in." Henry Li, general manager of BYD Auto, acknowledges this problem and only projects sales of a few hundred in the next 12 months. "We need to try and demonstrate the cars and show their benefits," he says.

Ample Battery Experience

What BYD lacks in experience as an automaker it makes up for in battery expertise, says Li. It is the world's largest producer of cell-phone batteries, boasting a 30% market share, and it also makes batteries for everything from power tools to laptops. "We have rich production and R D experience, so we were able to solve all the technological barriers and turn this into commercial use," he says.

The auto division's 3,000-strong research and development team developed a ferrous battery technology that he says is superior to the nickel metal hydrate battery used in the Toyota Prius. "For them the gas engine is the main driving mode; for us it's a small engine and a big battery," says Li. Actually, the F3 DM is based on 100 3.3-volt batteries strapped together and stored under the rear seat. Packs are good for about 2,000 recharges or 100,000 miles. The engine is only 1 liter and is capable of recharging the battery when the car is switched to gasoline mode.

Li figures the potential cost savings on fuel are a big selling point, not to mention the vehicles' smaller carbon footprint. He reckons it takes about $1.40 worth of electricity to power the car for 100 kilometers, compared with $7 for a conventional F3 gasoline model. BYD expects its first cars to be delivered to the city government of Shenzhen and China Construction Bank, which signed an order for them at the launch. Paul Lin, marketing manager of BYD's auto export division, said other banks and state-owned enterprises might follow suit as they see running a fleet of green cars as a key element of corporate social responsibility in China, where foul air in the cities is a huge problem. He says the Prius is still primarily a gasoline-powered car and is thus not viewed by Chinese corporate buyers as particularly green.

Still, it will take a lot of driving to justify the F3 DM's price tag, more than twice the gasoline version of the F3, which is available for between $7,500 and $9,900. Another challenge is how to set up quick-charge ports in Chinese cities, which will be essential for the success of BYD's fully electric vehicle, the E6, which it plans to roll out later next year. The company is exploring cooperation with local utilities to set up quick-charge ports that would allow batteries to restore 50% of capacity in 10 minutes. However, these would require a stronger current than is now available: Household outlets provide about 20 amps of current, while a quick charger would need about 100 amps of juice.

BYD has momentum on its side. The F3 was China's best-selling sedan in October, shipping more than 15,000 cars. In the first 10 months of the year, BYD's total sales grew 36%, compared with industrywide sales of just 10.25%. BYD's Hong Kong-traded shares are down 12% this year, compared with a nearly 50% fall in the Hang Seng China Enterprise Index of mainland stocks, thanks to the Buffet stake and strong auto sales. The company, which had sales of $3.1 billion in 2007 and earnings of $235 million, will have sales of $3.93 billion and profits of $196 million this year, estimates brokerage CLSA.

Thanks to 3-pointers from Joe Darger and Kendall Wallace, the Rebels still lead Santa Clara, 34-21, as we come into the stretch run of the first half. But the Broncos are keeping close thanks to a couple of nifty inside buckets -- one from John Bryant, one from James Rahon -- and some successful working of the officials by coach Kerry Keating. Noting a serious foul call disadvantage early on, he's stayed on the officials, and it worked.

Ezra Dyer pits the Nissan GT-R versus

The 2009 Nissan Maxima is something of a cult vehicle in a world filled with powerful but ultimately heartless luxury sedans. Indeed, the Maxima was one of the first cars luxurious enough to invite the creation of the new market segment which it now dominates. Times change though, and Nissan has got their work cut out, if they want to keep the 2009 Nissan Maxima the number 1 in its class.

As father time has caught up with me, I find that I travel to the downtown section of Waco less each and every year. Today, my wife and I decided to eat lunch at Ninfa's - so we took Valley Mills Drive down to Franklin and proceeded to their restaurant. Everything looked the same to us until we got close to the restaurant and then I was amazed at the massive construction that is taking place near the Waco City Hall and the Hilton Hotel.

Of course, like everyone else I have read about the massive Downtown Waco development projects currently underway - but until I saw the actual progress with my own two eyes, I had no idea how much was being done within those few short blocks that have pretty much remained abandoned since a tornado destroyed much of that part Downtown Waco back in the 1950's.

In addition to all of the new construction in Downtown Waco, there was even a great deal of road construction taking place there, as well. To say that I was impressed with the new look of the downtown section of Waco would be a huge understatement. Like many other Waco residents, I do not travel downtown that often anymore since most retail stores are located in the western part of the city these day. However, if you want to see some amazing community projects - travel downtown and just see how different it looks from this time last year.

With Connect by Hertz, car rental company Hertz takes on Zipcar directly in the consumer car sharing market.  Enterprise launched WeCar earlier this year, but seemingly has a more business-to-business focus.
Zipcar coined the term car sharing.  Is there really a difference between car sharing and car rental?
Zipcars CEO Scott Griffith seems to think so.  He mentions that Hertz is a car rental company, whereas Zipcar has been in the car sharing market for 8 years.
Mr. Griffith is absolutely right.  The dynamics of the market are very much different.  The magic of Zipcar is instant access, and that takes technology infrastructure and the time it takes to perfect such a system.  Rent by the hour is worthless if it takes 30 minutes (or even 10 minutes) to process your order.
However, the object of the broad terms of sharing and rental are exactly the same.  Transfer ownership into enjoyment.  Eliminate waste and excessive consumption in the process, exactly why Zipcar was started in the first place.
Where really morphs into is when you can realistically replace ownership.  The friction of a rental also has to be removed.  More instant enjoyment of services only when you need it, less headache to do so.  Thats where the real power, and honestly the real potential, lies.
Ill be checking out much more of Zipcar and other green, sustainable sharing services and will be blogging further about the experience.

Im not big on housework. I love the fact that my daughter does the dishes and the dusting. That my kids trade off vacuuming the house and that my son usually will clean the bathrooms. My husband details my car. So I dont mind doing the laundry (I am also known to cook when it suits me). Throwing the loads in while I straighten up and do my weekend grading. Yeah, I dont mind it. If I have the time I really dont mind folding it all either. I try and time it with my Netflix queue. However, the highlight of being a laundry goddess is the perk of making tip money out of the dryer. I probably pull in anywhere from pocket change to a few dollars occasionally even a fiver. Once some dumb ass left a twenty in his or her pocket. Their loss, my gain. Theres a bit of a thrill each and every time I am pulling clothes out of the dryer and see a nicely washed and dried bit of currency.

Wasnt I surprised the other day when I noticed what at first looked like paper, but soon became something immediately recognizable. As NOT money. Square foil packet. Serrated edges. When I reached in and grabbed it, there was the familiarity of the circular edge lurking beneath the packaging.

My kids, daughter 19, son, 16 were sitting at the kitchen counter eating. I came out of the laundry room and waved the singular condom package in the air.

Lookie what I just found in the dryer. Which one of you does this belong to?

Daughter raises an eyebrow at son while addressing me.

Yeah. Ive never had a boyfriend, I havent been on a date yet. But I am having sex. With random guys. I meant to tell you.

At least her sarcasm is up to par.

As far as I know, my son hadnt started dating yet either.

Son, are you seeing girls and we dont know about it? Did your dad have a talk with you about waiting and not have sex with hoochie girls that give it up to boys they hardly know?

Thats not mine. Its dads.

At the risk of damaging you permanently by talking about your parents sex lives, I need to tell you that your dad doesnt need condoms as chemotherapy rendered me post menopausal.

Im not sure, but I think there was a smirk tugging at the edge of my daughters mouth as she tried not to show how much pleasure she was getting from her brothers predicament.

Its dads. It has to be. It's not mine.

I tilt my head to the side and narrow my eyes at him.

He looks me dead in the eye and says, thats my story and Im sticking with it.

OK. But tonight, when your dad gets home. And I have to ask him who he is having sex that is not his wife, Ill be sure to tell him it was you that said it HAD to be his.

As I move the next load of laundry from the washer to the dryer, I hear heated whispering.

Upstairs, while I am folding laundry, son walks in.

You know, I left some of my clothes over at Xs house and he was wearing them. He must have left that in the pocket of one of my shorts. I threw everything he's been wearing straight into the laundry. DONT SAY ANTHING TO HIM NEXT TIME YOU SEE HIM.

My kids think because I work with 150 teenagers for a living I am prone to bossing around and nosing around any old teen that comes my way. Thats not ALWAYS true.

Later, when husband gets home, I tell him the whole story. I thought hed be a little more upset about son throwing him under the bus, but instead he was laughing his ass off. He calls son in the room.

That your hopeful condom?

Your field of dreams?

Be careful, those things have an expiration date you know.

Did you make sure you got the kiddie start up set?

And I thought I was the one that damaged our kids.

The preceding man story was inspired by two magnificent, manly awards that have come this way from two terrific dads who blog. Goodfather and Captain Dumbass. They have awesome blogs and have appropriately been awarded with many prestigious bloggie bling. It came to their attention that most of these awards tended to be on the girly side.

300,000 NAMES SUBMITTED TO UN IN FAVOR OF RIGHT TO LIFE

Where: Press briefing room, UN headquarters, New York
Contact: Austin Ruse, President 202 -393-7002 (office), 202-531-3770 (cell)
UN Headquarters, New York Tomorrow, December 10th, a coalition of social conservative groups from around the world will present a petition of 330,000 names calling for Member States of the United Nations to interpret the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as protecting the unborn child from abortion and protecting the traditional family.
The group formed in response and in opposition to petition efforts by pro-abortion groups International Planned Parenthood Federation and Marie Stopes International that are calling for a right to abortion on the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
We are proud not only to match but far surpass the efforts of pro-abortion groups, said Austin Ruse, president of the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute (C-FAM), the primary organizer of the petition drive. We launched our drive only two months ago and have generated more than 300,000 names from all over the world.
Ruse said, I suspect that Marie Stopes and IPPF will present a few thousand names. This shows what we have known all along; that abortion is supported mostly by elites while every day people are for protecting the unborn child.
Ruses group along with the Pro-Life Federation of Poland, the Institute of Family Policy of Spain, United Families International of the US, and US-based Concerned Women for America will present the petition at UN headquarters and in private meetings with Ambassadors.
The UN Petition for the Unborn Child and the Family asserts that the rights presented in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are inherent to every person and that governments should extend the right to life to all members of the human family, including the unborn child. The petition also calls on governments to: protect the family as the fundamental group unit of society, give special assistance to motherhood and childhood and promote the rights of parents.

The gardens are beautifully laid out as you can see in the small 'plan' on the left.

Some plants, furry and spikey at the same time, are extraordinary. The plant in the foreground above is called Cleistocactus Strausii and originated from Bolivia and Argentina (see close-up below).

A plant is called a succulent when it stores water to withstand dryness. The Garden of Eze has succulents from Africa and America that are well-adapted to arid climates. The water is stored in the fleshy parts - mostly the leaves and stems. These plants developed tricks to limit evaporation: smooth skins, sometimes covered with wax, hairs and thorns, instead of leaves. Many succulent plants, cacti and sisal (agaves) in particular came to Europe at the time of the great Discoveries. The first cactus is believed to have been brought back by Christopher Columbus but it was not until the Renaissance that these plants were studied and understood.

The first sisal (agave) was imported in the XVIth century and when it blossomed, it was several metres high and was considered quite a marvel at the time. General Weber, a member of Maximilian of Austria's expeditionary force in 1865, was one of many to whom we owe the presence of agaves on the Riviera. Today, cacti, agaves, aloes and euphorbias are a fundamental part of the Riviera landscape.

The release of the DVD of Holocaust, the mini-series starring Michael Moriarty, James Woods, and Meryl Streep, marks the 30th anniversary of its airing. I know Ive seen this miniseries before, and I know it wasnt when I was seven years old, so Im guessing I checked it out in VHS form from Detroit Public Library when I was living there 12 years ago. I seem to remember being better impressed by it then - when I knew significantly less about the Holocaust than I do now.
Ostensibly this is the story of two families, the German Jewish, affluent, educated Weisses ( meaning white, I assume not coincidentally) and the more working class, gentile Dorfs who are, at the beginning of this saga, poor and without work or helpful patronage. However, the scope of this mini-series is more ambitious than careful, believable coverage of two small families would allow for. Instead during the course of the story the viewer is taken to Buchenwald, Theriesenstadt, Auschwitz, and Sobibor, to the Warsaw Ghetto, Babi Yar, and the Wannsee conference which planned it all. We see Reinhard Heydrich in action, as well as Hans Frank, Adolf Eichmann, Heinrich Himmler, and Rudolf Hoess, the death farmer. While this gives a school student or entirely unknowledgeable viewer a decent overview of the many horrors perpetrated by the Nazis from 1935-1945, it completely stretches believable narrative by its seams.
The mini-series begins in 1935. The Weiss family is celebrating a wedding between their artist son, Karl, played by James Woods, and his lovely gentile bride, Inga (Streep). The danger of this union is apparent and discussed by several of the wedding guests as the Nuremberg Laws are about to be enacted. One of them clearly has his eye on Inga and is revolted by her choice to marry a Jew. The Weisses feel the tension, but try to diffuse it and laugh it off. Within a very short period of time, it becomes apparent even to matriarch Berta Weiss (Rosemary Harris) that things just arent funny. Josef Weisss longtime medical practice becomes Jew-only by decree and his former patient, Erik Dorf, warns him to leave Germany because worse is coming and he will not help him when it arrives.
Meanwhile the unemployed legal clerk Dorf has a sickly wife and two children to support and no idea how. His wife, Marta, tells him of an opening in Heydrichs office and advises him to be ambitious and confident. So the passive and Jew-neutral Dorf gets sucked into the world of the Nazi party and is soon devising way after way to bring about the downfall of the Jews around him.
After the violence of Kristalnacht, things become harder for the Weisses. They are forced to sell their stately home and medical practice for nearly nothing, and Josef is evicted to Poland where he was born. Soon after that Karl is taken away to Buchenwald, and the women must fend for themselves with Ingas help and connections. It all goes downhill from there into rape, murder, madness, insanity, torture, starvation, illness, overwork, and annihilation, basically in that order.
On the one hand, as I stated before, if you know nothing about the Holocaust, this is a good overview. You see the work camps, the ghetto, the death camps, the death pits. You see the political maneuvering behind the killing. You see the steady progression of Jewish families losing everything - civil rights, employment, homes and belongings, freedom, and, finally, life itself. But the Weisses are really too small a family to illustrate all of the rest. Eleven or twelve characters, all of them from urban Germany, are supposed to have witnessed the above as well as partisan fighting in the Soviet Union, the planned escape from Sobibor, and Wannsee? Um, no.
Erik Dorf is a nobody at the start of the movie, and, while he is bright, his wife has to push him time and again to be more ambitious in his career. Yet he gets an invitation to the secret conference where the Nazis plan everything? Dr. Weiss winds up on the Jewish Council in the Warsaw Ghetto trying to determine who is put on the trains while trying also to sneak some of them off. His brother winds up being a key player in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Karl who is even more passive then Erik Dorf, ends up doing illegal paintings of Theriesenstadt conditions as a form of resistance. Inga allows herself to be used sexually by her previous admirer who happens to get stationed at Buchenwald where Karl is taken first just to be able to get letters to her husband. s all just so unlikely. Yes, millions of unlikely, unbelievable things happened during World War II, but not all to two middle-class German families. I mean, Sobibor. They sort of had me until Sobibor, or maybe Babi Yar. No, thats not right. They lost me when Dr. and Mrs. Weiss and their friends were taken from the Warsaw Ghetto to Auschwitz. Warsaw didnt empty into Auschwitz, it emptied into Treblinka where people got off the trains and were immediately gassed. All the people. Immediately. But historical authenticity would eliminate pages more of drama for Dr. and Mrs. Weiss.
The main problem of this series, though, isnt historical accuracy. Its that the characters are just not three-dimensional. The Weisses are all good, noble, stoic, and brave. Inga and Karl are supposed to have this great love, a love that leads Inga into Hell for Karl, but its just not there on the screen. They have no chemistry. And even if they did, Karl is just so annoying. Passive. Bland. And possessed of a schlocky Bostonish accent. He never seems Jewish. He never seems anything.
Inga isnt much better. Shes the stand in for the Good Gentile. The kind that sees things As They Are. She loves her Jewish relatives - all of them. She defies her own family to protect them. She sleeps with a pasty, fat, antisemitic idiot to give her husband a lifeline. Shes necessary to this movie because, apart from one other passive character, all the other gentiles are high ranking Nazis or foaming antisemites. Its pretty much black/white. She can cry on cue, but the pathos of her situation - I never felt it.
The highlight of the mini-series is definitely the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising because by that point its all action and little melodrama. The only one left in Warsaw is Uncle Moses, and hes an okay guy, but hardly central. But the action, thats well done. You cant help but root for the rag-tag band of insurgents who managed to route the Nazis for nearly a month, even if you dont know any of them. Go, underdogs!
Okay, one last gripe here. I know the Holocaust is Jewish in the public consciousness, but many, many other people went up in flames under the Nazi onslaught. Six million Jews perished, but so did two and a half million Polish civilians, eleven and a half million Soviet civilians (as well as nearly twelve million Soviet troops), as well as a host of other peoples, many of them in the same death machine the Jews perished in. The Nazis hated the Slavs almost as much as they hated the Jews, and they were next on the list of people to go. Roma people were exterminated, gays and mentally disabled people were murdered, and one and half million German civilians also died. These were all people, some of them nice, some of them mean, some of them tolerant, some of them fiercely antisemitic, but all of them victims of the Nazis and all of them tragic stories. is too broad a title to use, if none of these people get a mention. Im waiting for a Holocaust mini-series that shows German, Polish, and Soviet civilians as people overwhelmed by this Great Horror and not as villains and bystanders in a Jew-only drama.

Provident Thoughts: Great Gift For Mothers

  • Dec. 11th, 2008 at 6:13 AM
I have found a very special gift for all of you moms! You need to put the bug in someone's ear that you want one of these! It is the Greatest Achievement Medal keychain/pendant for birth. How cool is that? I think I would get one for my mom. I mean, she has six of us! I know I would really love this as I never thought I would have a child of my own. Maybe they will come out with one for stepmoms too! After all, I do have four stepchildren. For you moms that stay at home with your children (or even those that have BM jobs), you can sell these yourself! What a great way to make some money from home. This is a unique gift that would be appropriate for any mother you know. Think about the extra money you could make for those little extras in life. I will definitely be checking on this as a business opportunity that will help me in my pursuit of being a work-at-home mom with a decent income! Check it out and see what you think.

I'll never understand how some women just can't see how much they're selling themselves out when they willingly choose to associate with men that just take up space and don't do anything to contibute to anyone's life. Shady characters that have a less than ideal life resume. They go from woman to woman and back again. They don't take care of their bodies. They can't hold a steady job that requires at least an ounce of brain power. Would these women want their sons to grow up and be like these men? I doubt it. Can they look at these men and truly feel an admiration for them? I think it's more like this: they stay with these men for how the men can make them feel temporarily. They show them a tiny bit of attention and that's translated to 'he loves me'. He continuously wants to sleep with me so that must mean he's a keeper! He left his wife/girlfriend for me so that MUST mean he loves ME!

Not all of these men are complete failures. Some of them have successful careers but when it comes to personal relationships they fail miserably. These ones are harder to spot but if you just look at their past patterns with women it's clear as day. And what have they done to change? How much time has passed since they left their last victim in shambles? What evidence is there of rehabilitation? Just his word? Well a man can swear up and down he's changed but his actions is what you have to pay attention to.

Not that I was always that smart. If I hadn't been so stupid I'd have seen how my ex-husband also left one woman for the next and never really learned from his mistakes. Of course we were so young so there wasn't a long enough history really but of the girlfriends he did have they were all right after the other. No time spent alone to reflect on mistakes and learn how to properly behave in an intimate relatonship. Naturally his pattern continues...like it does with so many other men (and women who keep going for these men).

This is an actual email from Jonathan Ehrlich, who barely survived the massacre:

From: Jonathan
Sent: Thu Nov 27 02:26:51 2008

Subject: Hey! From a Mumbai massacre survivor.

Hey guys.

Got all your notes. Thank you. I'm ok. A little shaky to be honest,
but really just happy to be here. I can't thank you enough for your
notes. You have no idea what they mean to me. Hope to see and speak
to you all soon.

I wrote the following on the plane:

It's 3.33 am Thursday Nov 27th. And I am writing this from Jet
Airways flight 0227, First leg of the Mumbai - Brussels - Toronto -
Vancouver journey. It is a stream of "adrenaline" piece. I
apologize in advance for the grammatical errors. But I wanted it
raw and unedited.

First, some context.
I have always been truly blessed. Lucky to be born to the most love
a child could ever wish for. Lucky to be born into a family that
prided itself on teaching me how to be a man. Lucky to have been
protected and sheltered by three strong, decent brothers. Lucky to
have found and married the kindest heart on the face of the earth.
Lucky to be blessed beyond blessed with four healthy, beautiful
children. Lucky to have wonderful friends who tolerate my
idiosyncrasies.

Tonight, these blessings, these gifts of love and life bestowed
upon me, this incredible good fortune, saved my life. And I
honestly don't know why.

The details.

I am in Mumbai on business. I'm staying at the Trident hotel. It's
sister hotel, the Oberoi, is right next-door and attached by a
small walkway.

I had dinner by myself in the Oberoi lobby after some late meetings.

I retired upstairs to my room. About 10 mins later my colleague,
Alex Chamerlin, text-ed asking me to join him and his friend in the
Oberoi lounge for a drink. I started to make my way out the door
but decided
that I was really too tired. I had a 7am flight, and needed to be
up at 5. Rest beckoned. I closed the light, got into bed and
quickly fell asleep. Lucky life-saving decision number 1.

About 1hr later there was knock at my door. A few seconds later,
the doorbell rang (they have doorbells for hotel rooms here -
who'da thunk?). I thought - who the hell is knocking at my door?
Turn down service? This late? Forget it. So I just lay there and
hoped they would go away. Lucky life-saving decision number 2.

Five minutes later I heard and felt a huge bang. I got up and went
to look out the window. A huge cloud of grey smoke billowed up from
the road below. I thought. Fireworks? I didn't see anyone milling
about so knew something wasn't right. I started to walk to the
light switch when - BANG - another huge explosion shook the entire
hotel.

Oh , I thought. Is that what I think this is? I opened the door
to the hallway. A few people were already outside.

I heard the word "bomb".

Oh shit. Oh shit I thought.

I'd like to tell you that I calmly collected my myself and my
things and proceeded to the exits.

I didn't. An adrenaline explosion erupted inside me and almost
lifted me off the floor. And I began to move. Really move.

I went back inside, quickly packed my stuff and went back into the
hall.

I ran to the emergency exit and started making my way down the
stairs (I was on the 18th floor).

There were a few people in the stairwell. I was flying by them. I
swear I could have run a marathon in 2hrs. I felt like pure energy.

About halfway down, I called my friend Mark, told him what had
happened and asked him to get me a flight - any flight - the hell
out of Mumbai.

I got to the lobby level. There was a crowd of people in the
corridor. No one moving. No one doing anything. No hotel staff. No
security people.

Shit. I thought. We are sitting ducks.

I decided to get out of there. First, into the lobby.

I stepped through the door into the silent lobby. My first sight
was a blood-soaked plastic bag and bloody footsteps leading into
the reception area. I proceeded forward. The windows were shattered
and glass was everywhere. There wasn't a soul around.

Bad decision, I thought. I quickly retreated to the corridor. The
crowd of people had grown.

We've got to get out of here I yelled. Let's go.

I looked around for the emergency exit and started running towards it.

I made my way through the bowels of the hotel and out into a dark
alley. It was empty and silent. I looked to my left and about 100m
away saw a few security guards milling about.

Run they screamed. I began to move toward them.

I reached the main street and was immediately swept up into the
Indian throngs (for those who have been to Mumbai you know what I
mean). People everywhere. But they were all eerily quiet. No one
was talking. No car horns. Nothing.

I started yelling "airport airport".

Some one (a hotel cook I believe) grabbed me and my bag and threw
me in a rusty mini-cab.

So is yet to select the Senate, which will replace
President-elect Barack Obama, if you were arrested
on federal corruption charges, which Illinois Governer
Rod Blagojevich was today?
About this topic in the U.S. Senate selection, federal
prosecutors alleged Blagojevic filed an application for
appointment as secretary of health and human services
in the new administration Obama, a profit or work in the
EU in return for the appointment of an EU-preferred
candidate.
Blagojevic and Harris also planning to demand firing of the
Chicago Tribune editorial members of the board is
responsible for publishing critical Blagojevic in exchange for helping to sell Wrigley Field, Chicago cubs baseball stadium owned by Tribune Co.

Blagojevic and Harris, along with others, gathered and tried to gain an economic advantage
for the governor, members of his family and his campaign fund in exchange for appointments
to state boards and committees, government employment and public contracts.

"They claim that Blagojevic put a" for sale "sign on the appointment of a U.S. senator,
was personally involved in the" pay-to-play system with the urgency of meeting the seller
of its annual sales, and corruptly used his office to trample the editorial voices of criticism. "

The governor and his chief of staff is of course the presumption of innocence. But something
tells me the good people of Illinois are on their way to insist that there can not be the person
who chooses a replacement Obama.
