Six stars on the five-star scale and here I go again with another book about war and peace but, you know, I just think it's so extremely important for an American child to understand how the rest of the world lives. No, it isn't truly possible, but I think it's a good thing to at least realize that many of the world's children are not spending their time at Chuck E Cheese, soccer practice, or even school.
This is an outstanding book on several different levels.
First, it gives a bit of a description of the Muslim religion -- holidays, traditions, etc. The distant and poorly understood Muslim faith is humanized through a show of kids enjoying the love and laughter of their families. After September 11th, I'd have to agree with many that it is important to get as much understanding going as we can.
Then the tanks roll into town. An autobiographical snippet of the author's own childhood, this is a true story of the communist occupation of post-World War Two Bulgaria. Kyuchukov steers clear of trying to explain this to a child and instead keeps it in the perspective of our child narrator, Hussein. There is fear and sadness in the village as mosques are closed and Ramadan is cancelled. Eventually, soldiers come to Hussein's home with guns and dogs, tear up the family's identification cards and tell them that they must choose Christian names instead. Hussein doesn't want to, but has no choice and so he changes his name to Harry.
A sad story -- real, colorful and alive -- it is just one small tale of life outside America. Freedom from persecution, though often taken for granted in this country, is such a huge security blanket as well as a luxury not widely enjoyed in our world. Claire is not yet old enough, but I would think that this book would generate an awful lot of questions leading to a rather important discussion of the real state of the world. We will read it again when she is a bit older.
